Day 1 - We set off on our first great adventure,
kc:
Well, here it is, Tuesday, 31 July 2007, and my terrific boss, Shirley, has given me the day off 'work' to pack up my belongings and get outta town. We are staying in Carla & Roger's driveway (been there about 2 weeks, since we closed on the house in Clemmons), and we work hard to leave no traces of our occupancy. The thank-you towels are embroidered and boxed up, the card is written, their cat is fed. We moved the trailer and cut the grass where it had been. The dishes and the laundry are all done, and we're on the road by 9:30 am.
The broken-down truck near Charlotte, on I-77, slows us down quite a bit and does nothing favorable for our fuel consumption/mileage. Three hours go by, we are down a half tank and we have only traveled 150 miles. Not the best of starts. But, we're on the road, and it really doesn't matter when we get there, anymore, as long as we're at Papa's by Sunday evening. So, off we go, stopping again for fuel and a pit-stop the other side of Columbia, SC.
Not long after that, we hit I-95 and head south. FINALLY!! Now we're heading the right direction!! We make pretty good time and we're cruising along just fine. Believe it or not, the truck seems to be managing the added weight without much trouble at all. All of a sudden, POW!!!! What the HECK was that, I wondered????
Dick & I look at each other and, in unison say, "That was US! We blew a tire!" Dick immediately slowed the rig and luckily, we had a shoulder to pull onto. Inside 30 seconds, we were stopped. At least no fire, this time. However, we did have some damage to the bottom of the slideout. And, of course, the tire was totally ruined and stripped of its tread completely. Oh well, that's why we pay Good Sam for Emergency Road Service. A couple of calls to them, a short but HOT hike back to the mile-marker, and a couple of service trucks later, we were back on the road. All in all, a 61 minute delay. NOT BAD, in our book. Again, we were lucky - there was a shoulder, we were able to get off the road quickly, we were safe, and we had a spare. Who knew what else was coming!!!
So, we pull into New Green Acres, in Walterboro, SC, about an hour after we'd planned, set up, and go for a swim. Sunny did well and was glad to see us return quickly. After that, tacos for dinner, and we were ready for bed. Goooooood night!!!
