Escape is near!
Well, it's a blustery day here at the coast....but it's WARM!!! They are forecasting showers in and out all day, sometimes thunder & lightning, and when it's through, I hear it's gonna be COLD. Well, cold for here is in the 50's. BUT, the BIG news is that as we were discussing what to do about these daggum bugs, we started getting some hits on our Workamper resume. THAT's cuz we set our availability to immediate!
We even got a couple hits on our Florida Volunteer, but they were for some rough areas. Hillsborough (up by Tampa) was in need of a camp host, but after what Mike & Brandi and Max & Margarete said about the transformation of Lake Manatee, we were really skeptical about taking that position. We'd heard that the guests at the park were pretty much running rampant and acting even more like heathens and hooligans than those that had come our last couple of weeks. We'd had reports of kids climbing trees and out-of-control campfires and lots of partyin' till all hours of the night. Nothing we'd want to be responsible for policing, that's fer sure. Soooo, you can understand our reluctance to accept another job doing just that. PLUS cleaning potties. Nah, just not what we wanted to do.
We'd investigated and discussed moving to Jacksonville, to Mayport Naval Station. You may recall that's where we have stayed on many occasions, and we'd even posted some pictures from there when we first set out on this expedition. We really like the park and love to watch the ships & dolphins go by. They have a "yard" sale every Saturday morning, too, where I could sell some sewing stuff. (I'd even have time to sew!!) Plus, free laundry, free ice (yeah, no longer needed), free Wi-Fi, BEEEEYOOOTiful and FREE beach (we CAN take puppy!) and on-base medical treatment facilities, and friends (Karyne & Jon Lyon) nearby. Sounds like Nirvana, but, as with all good things, it does come at a price. About $400 a month, actually.
Well, we must be living right and still in God's good graces, because we received a phone call from a private resort in Perry, Georgia, and they need a host couple. There, duties include taking reservations/money & greeting campers and some minimal groundskeeping. Nothing about potties here! Nothing about working 7 days a week, most of every day! Plus, there's a POOL AND HOT TUB! In the summer, that could come in handy. But, even better than all of that, it was mentioned that they'd PAY us, in addition to providing a free site. That'll really be nice!! We are still recovering from the dental work and associated airfare costs. Speaking of which, did y'all see that Skybus is no longer in business??
That will sure put a crink in our emergency travel plans.
And we were working to get arrangements solidified to go back to Greensboro for Rebecca's wedding, but now, I just dunno. With so many flights cancelled (personally, I think it's all a protest over high fuel costs) and prices going sky-high, I just dunno that we will make it in person.
Back on track, though....we informed the Ranger as soon as we knew we would be leaving, and confirmed we'd work this weekend and Monday for him. Oh, and we also have to complete our fence-mending (some dude backed into a board & split it, the fool) before we leave. We'd leave Tuesday, but silly me...I followed the Bookmobile to a stop one day, and signed out 4 books. Needless to say, I've read all the books already, but since it only comes every other week, now we have to wait for its return. So, Wed a.m., we will ride up & drop off the books, then do any last minute shopping before we head out of town. So much for St. Marks and its no-see-'ems. Oh, we did have to cancel our gig at Honeymoon Island, though, since we'd been forewarned about bugs there. The Ranger was very candid and told us if we could make it through the heat and their no-see-ems, we'd do fine. Bummer. We were really looking forward to our "own little Gulf island paradise." Oh well, maybe Mike & Brandi will be able to take our place. We know they stopped in for an interview on their way back up to Ohio, but we didn't know at the time that we'd be vacating a position for them! Bet they're happy now!
I've spent a few hours trying to get a forum put together on our webpage, but I had to engage GoDaddy support, because I don't see the icons they reference in the Help pages. And, obviously, I've not made my question clear, because they provided an explicit and detailed explanation of how to use a forum/discussion form. Trouble is, I cannot get the form to display!!! And, at Mimi's request, I finally put us out there on Myspace. You can find us at http://www.myspace.com/kcdc1989. It's under construction, and you'll find some familiar pictures, but hopefully, I can update that easier than that silly Photobucket site. Staples has mentioned using Snapgenie, but I've not been there yet, either.
Well, in spite of the terrible weather, we've had a banner day here at the park. We had a group of 43 college students, plus several families out and about. I will have to take my socks off to count up the entrance fees!! And I dunno WHAT I'm gonna do about that .01 that Dick rang up!! I guess that's what the pencil is for!
Gettin' on dinner time - anyone got any suggestions?
Y'all take care!
