Welcome Home!

After an uneventful (THANK YOU, God!!) trip on Thursday, with only one slightly out-of-the-way "detour" (WHY, oh, WHY do they take the signs down for washing when WE are driving in unfamiliar territory???), we arrived in Perry, Georgia on Thursday afternoon, and were greeted warmly.  Come to find out, the lady in the office (Mickey) had received a couple of pictures of us.  We've posted them on our home page for all to see.  No wonder she was so very relieved to see us in person.  Apparently, we don't much look like what she was expecting, and I, for one, am glad of that!

We were just beginning to get settled in, when we got a friendly knock-knock on our door.  A couple of long-term residents were checking to see if we needed anything, and letting us know that they'd be by later with a loaf of fresh, homemade bread.  And a couple of hours later, they WERE!  Slapped some butter on that puppy, and mmmmm-hhhmmmmm GOOD.  And, Poof!  Gone!  Turns out, Amy & Ron are currently missionaries, but in their former life, they owned a bakery.  Too bad for us.  There goes all that hard work to get back down to slim.  Shortly thereafter, we walked Sunny, and ran into two other couples that knew who we were and welcomed us to the park.  And this morning, there was a "welcome back/welcome new friends" breakfast for us and another couple that had come to visit.  (Guess which one WE were!)  All in all, it's a very friendly and warm bunch of people.  And so far, the no-see-um's are not so bad that we are driven indoors.  Yeah, there are a few, for a short time, but they've not stopped us from walking, visiting or having our windows open.  Well, we will be shutting the windows shortly, as the sun drops, so does the temperature!  And, as you know, when the mercury dips to 65*, I have to start bundling up.

We spent today exploring the nearby (and not-so-nearby) towns and country-side and locating the all-important Wally-world & Kroger (grocery) stores.  Somehow, we managed to miss the historic part of downtown, but, we DID find out about another dance group.  The lady at the visitor's center used to be very active, and asked us to pass along the message that she's still alive & kicking, though she hasn't been dancing lately.  Amazing how many people do or used to square dance.  Ya know another thing we found?  Well, we were told about, but we didn't go there yet....a U-Pick strawberry field.  YUM!  They are open for business and we will be up that way before another week passes, I can assure you.  I can only hope they are as good & sweet as the ones we picked so often in Florida.  With the price of fuel nowadays, we are working hard to buy & eat locally-grown items and not rely so much on stuff from out of state (and even LESS on out of country!).  Besides, as you must know, it obviously tastes much better fresh from the field.

We've not yet started working in the office officially yet, but we got an overview yesterday...and judging by the incoming crowd today, it promises to be lively.  What a far cry from the museum, where we had 4 visitors for the whole day of Monday.  There's no place to really ride our bikes in camp; we can walk end-to-end in about 5 minutes, but there are a couple of state parks not far off that may have some trails.  Oh, but we will have a golf cart to lead campers to their sites.  That's way more than we had in all the 500+ acres at Lake Manatee, so we're in fat-city!!

On another subject, I don't know if you've noticed or not, but we have established a forum for y'all to chat with each other and us...  It's called CampfireCircle, and you can get there from a link on our home page, or by typing http://campfirecircle.thecallanders.name in your browser's address line.  So far, no one's posted anything, but we keep looking for comments and discussions.  Please feel free to start one and see who chimes in with what.  If you need/want another category, just let us know and we'll put it out there for you!!

Well, that's about it from this end, and I don't want to be accused of rambling...at least not HERE.  (Wouldn't mind bein' a Ramblin' Rose....but there's time for that later..

Y'all take care and don't work too hard...

k
