Signs of the times
Today was another day off (I love the sound of that!!) and it promised to be pretty, so we packed up a few waters, the doggie, her bowl & bags, my computer, and off we went. You'd think we would take this time to go enjoy the beach, but, nope, decided to give technology a go. We fired up the 'puter & its GPS, bought a newspaper, and went sailing! Oops, make that SALE-ing. Yard-sale-ing. We haven't had the opportunty to do that in MONTHS, and boy, did we get our eyes opened. We were looking for patio furniture (like a simple little 2-seater table, bistro set), a bowl in which to microwave sugar, to make pecan candy, possibly a dog crate, and maybe car. SMALL, CHEAP car. We came away with a new respect (fear) for the economy, a $1 plant stand, a $5 pullbehind-your-bike wagon and a couple of glass bowls that might work ok. And a free plant in a bucket.
(No frogs, Theresa, no frogs!!) We went down to the towns of Englewood, North Port & Port Charlotte. PC is supposed to be a wealthy town. And I'm sure that at one time, it was. Today, it is mosly populated by FSBO & FOR SALE signs. Just about every house is waterfront, and almost everyone ha a couple of water toys in their yard — boats, bigger boats, jet ski's — or old man toys — Harleys, 'Vettes, etc. And it apears that almost everything is for sale. Many homes appear vacant and foreclosed, even haunting with their windows replaced by plywood and big orange X's on the sides. Can't help but wonder if the X doesn't mean "house searched; no one found." Or, sorry, we cannot afford to stay, so it's yours for the taking.
We loked at several little cars, tho, finding one or 2 possibilities. I liked the Mercedes for $2950, however, it became much less attractive once Dick led me to the other side & I could see he leading $1. I suggested since it was only a 1, maybe we could talk 'em down? Oh well, we didn't really want a black car anyway.
But technology was great! I was able to initiate the GPS module and simply enter the address of the desired Yard Sale and away we went! Told me how to get from "here" to "there" and back again!! And every time we went down a side road to an un-published sale, she got a little huffy. Was first time we'd really used it in this capacity and it seemed to work well. If she weren't so annoying when we got off route, maybe we'd consider leving her out all the time.
The weather here is truly beautiful, tho, with the high being only 88*, but it is VERY humid. Yeterday, we went swimming in the pool...Of course, I didn't get dunked or go underneath, but I did wade in to my chest haris!! And it was COOOOOL. And I do not mean KEWL. COLD in the shade. Of course, hubby and the two ladies from Michigan found it REFRESHING. Nah, I didn't stay in it long!
Well, we are approaching our street once more, so I need to sign off. Y'all try to keep your options open and stay stafe. We love you & miss you!

Sounds like you all are having an interesting time. I did not understand the $1 on the car story. It looks like no body will be spared this recession. It sure makes retirement more difficult but life could be worse. Don't know our plans right now for the winter but we are still dancing DBD. I assume you are reading all about Wachovia. It is on the front page every day.
Joke: What is similar and what is different betweeen an investmant banker and a pigeon?
Ans: They both live on the street NOW but only one can make a deposit on a 2009 Mercedes Benz. (hahahahha)
In some respects, this is funny but it is not real funny when you think about it.
Hang in there,
Tim
